Designing hybrid events that stay interactive

Hybrid events often end up with two classes of attendees: those on site enjoy the atmosphere, while those online just watch a stream. The right design can keep both groups engaged.

01Design for online attendees from the start

Don’t treat online attendees as an extra audience. Decide early what they will do in each session: ask questions, answer polls, or discuss in small groups.

02One moderator just for the online room

Assign one person whose only job is the online audience: reading out their questions, greeting them, and making sure their voices reach the stage.

03Keep sessions short and varied

Attention runs out faster in front of a screen. Break long content into shorter sessions and mix in Q&A, group discussions, or networking breaks.

04Make room to meet

People also come to events to meet others. Offer group discussion rooms and one-on-one online meetings, not just a chat box.

05Use data for the next event

Track which sessions were watched most, when attendees left, and which questions came up most. This data shapes your next event and your sponsor reports.
